We've been to George's Garage twice and took out of town guests with us both times. We were impressed by the variety on the menu since it is billed as a seafood restaurant, but it's a good thing because some of us don't like much in the way of seafood. The decor and ambience is nice and the service was good each time. The wait staff could have come by a little more to check on us and we were missing some plates, but we used our bread plates for the appetizers. People in our group ordered lamb, trout, pasta, and filet mignon and everyone loved what they ordered. Their chocolate mousse cake was also excellent.

I have been to Georges a bunch and always usually go for drinks or sushi. But last Friday 10 of us girls went for a girls night out on my recomendation. We were seated promptley but had to wait and wait and wait for a waitress. She finally deciced to get out drink orders, after that she was gone again...only to return with half of the drinks...it was horrible all night. I asked for a wine list and I waited only to see her in the corner dancing with another waiter! It was uncalled for and I felt horrible about suggesting it to anyone. Our sushi order was wrong when it got there and had to be sent back.....to top the night off the MIA waitress shows up with the check all together. Did she think 10 girls were all paying together..some of us had cash, some had cards. When I told her in a very nice way we had to make a movie and we wanted our checks seperated she snatched the check out of my hands, rolled her eyes and told me she had other tables and it would take a while! I was highley upset by now....the assistant manager came over and split the checks up only after we all had to write our orders down on napkins! It was truley horrible! Though they have good drinks and sushi..its not worth it for the terrible service, Just go to kanki for sushi and drinks and save your self the hours of waiting and bad treatment.

Pros: good sushi

Cons: the worst sevice Ive ever had

This is my second time going to George's Garage. When I went almost a year ago, I really liked the food. But what impressed me was the service. We were greeted very quickly when we got in and they saw on the reservation that it was our first time there. The waitress was very professional. This time, the food was still good. (But, like other expensive restaurants, the quantity is not great.) The service this time was bad. We went on Mother's Day, but at 5:00 when it was practically empty. It took the hostess awhile to even look up and longer to show us to our table (even though we had a reservation). The waiter had very little personality. In terms of food, we liked everything except for the cheesecake which was way too sour. Seems like they left out the sugar by accident. The food is rather expensive. I suggest getting a coupon at restaurant(dot)com.

Pros: Good food

Cons: Expensive

My boyfriend and I went to dinner at George's on Friday night. After we were seated, it was 15 minutes before we were greeted. On top of that our waitress was hardly tentative, we only saw her twice during the whole meal; the first time was to take our order and the second was to bring our bill. My boyfriend ordered the New England Clam Choder and rainbow trout. The chowder was very salty and the trout lacked favor. I ordered the Ahi tuna entree and received the Ahi tuna appetizer. I would have asked our waitress to correct my order, but we never saw her. For the cost of the dinner, between $18-$22 per entree, I would go else where.

Pros: downtown durham

Cons: noisy, slow service, cost of meal

Heres the Down Low on George's and its not pretty. The Management is terrible. Mario and Charles consistently steal money from customers, between over charging and and lying to fruitlessly neglecting their jobs. They have absolutely no respect for their employees and on multiple occasions have yelled at there employees in front of customers (How unprofessional!) The food is good, but very overpriced and the Wait Staff is rude and mean beyond belief. They don't seem to care about the quality of dinner of there customers and on many occasions it has take OVER TWO hours to have my food. The last and final time I went, I was completely infuriated that after having made a reservation a week prior and still having to wait 30+minutes before I was seated. Completely inappropriate and unprofessional. Its nearly impossible to get in touch with a manager, I have called on several occasions with no response at all. The hostess are nice yet completely clueless. All in all, take your money else where, this place is a waste.

Pros: The Food is Decent

Cons: Managment, Wait Staff

My husband and I love to eat here. Soemtimes we will eat in the diningroom but often we sit at the sushi bar. Its the best sushi around. George's has a wide variety of choices: sushi, order from the menu or help yourself at the buffet.

This restaurant has a nice decor and very good entrees , but stay away from the sushi. It was by the far most expensive I have seen in the triangle and certainly no where near the best.

Pros: Nice decor

Cons: Poor Service and Sushi

George’s Garage is one of the many Giorgio’s Hospitality Group restaurants. This one is similar to Spice Street in that it’s a mix of sushi bar, lounge area, and main dining room. The lounge looked cozy, with warm, dim lighting, and I was quickly saddened that we chose to sit in the dining room instead. It was garishly bright. I felt like I was in a warehouse with bright yellow walls that was populated with families who wanted to see and be seen. So, if that’s what you like, you should really check it out. My husband’s sashimi platter was very pretty but as I’m not a big fan of raw food, I didn’t sample it. I had the coldwater swordfish with linguini in a spicy clam sauce and I loved it. The steak was perfectly peppered. The sauce was very light yet full of rich flavor. I wasn’t hungry but couldn’t help cleaning the plate. My meal was accompanied by an Alex Martini, which got high marks. Overall, the bland atmosphere was overshadowed by dishes that definitely exceeded expectations. I’ll just sit by the bar next time.

Pros: Tasty & pretty food!

Cons: Warehouse feel in main dining room.

I went to George's a couple of times and thought it was mostly atmosphere with some good (but not great) food to enjoy. You pay for the atmosphere and can enjoy a little snob appeal. Normally I'd say it's worth at least 3 stars had it not been for last time I was there... Keep in mind the last visit was New Year's Eve at the beginning of 07... But I figured maybe something's changed. I hope so. I sat at the sushi bar... The rolls were large, loose and poorly made. The fish quality was 'just ok'. It was definitely amateur night it seemed. However, there were things crawling around in the sushi case, near the fish. My wife and I decided lost our appetites. It was loud and crowded that night and finding a manager was proving a challenge. So, we just left never to return. FYI, I can't say the name of the things that were crawling because this site won't allow me to use the word. The only reason I'm writing this is because I saw George's come up as a potential sushi restaurant in a search for others... and just felt compelled to share this cautionary comment. I can only hope they no longer keep an entomological experiment in their sushi bar but there are so many good places in Durham to have sushi that I can't imagine why anyone would choose George's. Good luck.

Pros: Nice atmosphere

Cons: Big sanitation problem in sushi bar

I came to this town on business trip from NY and heard about good reputation for this restaurant, so I picked here for my dinner. I had a seat but waiter had never shown up. I think my seat was an area for middle-aged waiter and he seemed not to want to take my order. Another young waitress realized it, and she took my order on behalf of him. Food itself was not bad, however it was definitely terrible experience for me. How poor he is to live in such a small world. He should live in NY, so he could realize how the world is changing, hopefully…

It's hard to please everybody, but this Durham restaurant comes darn close.  See the full editorial review.
