I have to say I really love the atmosphere at Dos Taquitos but the prices are extremely high for what you get. Frankly the food was not as good as I had remembered it being on a recent visit and inflation was apparent in all the drink and menu choices. Still if you want a cozy place to eat some chips and have a drink you could make worse choices.
Pros: Great decor and ambience. Very cozy.
Cons: Very high prices. Indifferent servers and staff. Food was mediocre at best.

I have eaten at the Dos Taquitos downtown many times and it has always been amazing. The steak is the most delicious I've ever eaten. I went to the Creedmoor Rd location tonight for the first time and it was awful. Maybe it was just a fluke, but it was a major problem and the waiter/mgmt didn't offer any adjustment, which I thought was not cool. Both of us ordered something with "steak" and honestly, it was inedible. It tasted like rotted or sour meat (citysearch will not let me type the word "r o t t e n" - interesting). After one bite and almost gagging, we pushed the steak aside and filled up on chips and rice and beans. We told the waiter that it was bad, not just that we "didn't like it" (as he suggested) but that it really tasted like the meat had gone bad. He asked if we wanted something different to eat, but we were full by that point (he had disappeared till the "end" of our meal so there wasn't really a chance to get something else before then). Anyway, he apologized and took it away and then brought us the bill for almost $40. So we basically paid $40 for chips, salsa, beans, and rice. Will not be going back to that location, but I will continue to go to one downtown, which I give 4 stars.
Pros: unique menu and atmosphere (though very dark!)
Cons: meal was inedible; waiter was friendly but didn't comp bad food

My husband and I love mexican food and we ended up at this restaurant by chance and loved it!! My husband is hispanic and has tried just about every type of mexican food you can think of and loves Dos Taquitos. When went late at night for dinner and I'll have to say, the lighting definitely needs help. I can't stand eating my food with little light but I can see how some people would find it romantic. The food is SUPER SPICY so if you have heartburn ... BEWARE! I love spicy food but that was even hard for me, I had heartburn all night!! It's different than most restaurants around and if you like spicy mexican food, I would recommend trying it. They are very expensive, especially their drinks, but I thought it was good food and I'll definitely go back.
Pros: Authentic mexican food, good food, friendly servers
Cons: Over priced, expensive food and drinks, dark lighting

I'm an AVID Mexican food eater. In fact, I was born and raised in New Mexico, so I am very familiar traditional Mexican food. Although the food was good, it is NOT a typical Mexican food menu. In fact the waiter told me it was "Columbian" food really, and NOT MEXICAN. It took me forever to pick something because I was not familiar with any of the entrees, and I could barely see my menu it was so dark in there, although I enjoyed the atmosphere. It was a "different" food experience. I enjoyed it, it wasn't BAD, but I wouldn't go back.
Pros: Yummy margaritas, lots of options in that department
Cons: Dark atmosphere and EXPENSIVE!!

I grew up in San Diego, California, and I can assure you with absolute certainty that whatever it is they are serving at this place, it was NOT Mexican Food. It was the first time in my 40 years that I stood up and walked out of a restaurant after one bite. For $15 (!!!) they delivered 2 very small uncooked flour tortillas with a few pieces of dried up meat and some melted cheese. When I asked for a few cut up tomatoes or a dollop of sour cream, I was told I could *ORDER* that separately - because I assume $15 wasn't enough money to be able to provide a tablespoon of sour cream? The rice was HARD. Tasted like Uncle Ben's microwaved rice with frozen peas dropped in it. The rest of my family also sat stunned, so it wasn't just me. Truly, it was inedible. It was also unbelievably filthy, which they try to hide with almost no lighting inside whatsoever, and lots of *decorating*. Coming from California, where I can get an amazing Mexican *meal* in an clean restaurant, perhaps looking out over the Pacific and in a beautiful setting for about...$7.95....I was disgusted and appalled at what they were trying to pass of as food, and at those prices?? Hello...I can get an amazing meal at a REAL restaurant in San Francisco for less than that! Please don't tell me your overhead is steeper than San Francisco because it's not even close. I have lived in both LA and San Francisco, and for $15 a plate (my husband's meal was $17), I can get a pretty unbelievable meal in a gorgeous place. Hello folks...you're in RALEIGH...you're in a STRIP MALL in RALEIGH serving canned / frozen reheated food. What we don't get is that people here seem to just accept it! I guess maybe they don't know any better.... or they've just given up hope after being transferred here by some company, they have no other choices. Either way, gosh...don't ever go to San Francisco, San Diego or LA and eat, you poor souls wouldn't believe your taste buds.
Pros: none
Cons: inedible food at extraordinarily high prices.

Dos Taquitos is our favorite place for a fun dinner out, whether it's date night or a big group. The atmosphere is like not other...I love the sombreros on the ceiling over the bar, the dimly lit inside, and the butterfly-adorned outside area. The Margarita Maria is great, never weak. I really enjoy the chilaquiles, a cheesy dish with tortillas, chicken and broccoli, and the gorditas have a satisfying cornmeal shell. We also love all the soups, such as the cactus soup! I'm suprised there is only one $ for this place, because the prices do add up between margaritas, chips, guacamole, entrees...if you are into all that. For big parties, they can not split the checks, which seems somewhat outdated. But, no real complaints about this place, I enjoy taking out of town guests here for a fun Mexican night!
Pros: atmosphere, food, selection of food
Cons: crowded on weekends

*Please note: I believe some reviews below are for Dos Taquitos Centro, which is on Wilmington St. They are by the same owner, but have completely different menus. This one is much more reasonably priced than Centro. Spending three weeks eating out every night on the company's dollar might seem exciting to some people, but after having 'okay' meals for several nights in a row, we were really hoping this place would be a positive change of pace. Gladly, it was. The atmosphere was great. It’s a small restaurant, and it was busy, so it was difficult to find a place to sit or stand while we waited, but we spent our time drinking margaritas and checking out all the unusual decorations. We went on a Friday night and the place was packed. We probably waited for 45 minutes. But we were willing to as long as the food was good. And it was. The salsa was spicy but oh so good (and I’m not a big spicy person, either). We stuck to their “Tex Mex” menu, but even the burritos and quesadillas were well made and had lots of flavor. The service was good. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. I’m confused by the negative reviews below. Even on a Friday night with a 45 minute wait we were very pleased by the end of the meal. The proportions were good. I only ate half of my meal and was stuffed. All in all, it’s a great place and we’re going back tonight!
Pros: Atmosphere, Food
Cons: The wait on a Friday night

Not to be confused with Dos Taquitos Centro (which is downtown), the North Raleigh location has been in business for sixteen years and is still going strong! It really is unique and one of the Triangle's very best. Not fancy, mind you, but a very funky atmosphere and fantastic, authentic food. Some might be quick to call this "Mexican" food, but there are several dishes which are more common south of Mexico's border. We've never had a bad meal here. It's one of those places that you really should take visitors because they probably have never been to any other place quite like it. On our last visit, total bill was $97 (three diners, no dessert, one non-drinker, tip included).
Pros: atmosphere, food
Cons: sometimes they do not take reservations

It's listed as one '$' but entrees started at $14, averaging around $20. The food was pretty good, but Carrburritos in Carrboro seems to acheive the same for much less cost. The lunch prices were about half, and I would probably be willing to pay that. The appetizers and ambience seem to be part of the rapid jump in menu price from lunch, but the appetizers kinda sucked. The ceviche didn't seem to have any cilantro in the marinade and it was really fishy tasting. The rellena appetizer was kinda bad...though if there was more goat cheese it might have been awesome, but the rellena flavor had nothing to complement it, until i managed to save up enough goat cheese to have a nice balance of flavor on the last bite. Tacos were good and one of the cheaper things on the menu. If El Rodeo didn't always make someone in my company really sick the next day, I would always choose it over Dos Taquitos (except maybe for the random lunch): bigger margaritas (about 2x), similarly good food, 1/3 the price.
Pros: goat cheese (but they need more of it)! tasty steak tacos.
Cons: price. price. price. did i mention the price?

We love the main Dos Taquitos location and I was very happy to discover the new downtown location is finally open. I ate lunch during the "dry run" day and found the food well seasoned and flavorful. The menu was a bit limited, but it appeared that most entrees could be prepared with steak, chicken, or veggies to add a little more variety. Most lunch options are around $8. The food tastes freshly prepared. They also offer several drinks that I was not familiar with . I had a very tasty drink made from rice water, sugar, and cinnamon.
Pros: Fresh food, well prepared, quality ingredients show in final product, friendly staff
Cons: Parking (not an issue for downtown workers), seating for more than a party of 4 might be limited (although I didn't ask if there was seating upstairs, I suppose that could be a possibility)
