The receptionist though professional can only be called that: professional. BUT, he is not who I went to see and so, let me contrast his stiffness with the actual stylist. I had Kelly, who was very cool with my hair-cutting anxiety. Kelly was everything you want in a stylist: competent, professional and warm. I am definitely going back to that place. It is cozy and small - which I also like. And important for many of us, the haircut/wash/consulting only set me back $38 for the cut and $6 for the tip.
Pros: I got in the day I called for an appointment, good washing products (Aveda)

After a not-so-great cut at another salon, I went to 135 to get the opinion of a new stylist and to correct the problems with my previous cut. Kelly immediately figured out what went wrong with my hair and how to soften the damage. She was really pleasant as were the rest of the staff. It seems like they have a little family at 135. It's a little more expensive than I like to pay for haircuts ($38) but it's hard to find less expensive, quality salons in Chapel Hill. I'll probably go back.
Pros: Skilled stylists, friendly
Cons: Price

I have been going off and on for a few years, for lack of finding a better place. Quit going when haircuts and highlights were not getting any better, not only that but there were careless mistakes made. Don't waste your time or money- stylists rush, don't seem to care about customer satisfaction, don't really listen to what you want. Very hard to find parking. Friendly staff but unskilled stylists.
Pros: friendly staff
Cons: no parking, careless stylists

I first went for a haircut and April was fantastic, exactly what I wanted. Then after attempting to do my own highlights (ended up neon orange) I called panicked. Jonathan fit me at 5pm on Friday- the one time I could come before an event on Sat. He patiently corrected my hair for 3 hours on a FRIDAY night. I was completely impressed. And he cut my layers in a new way I love. Jonathan is amazing. Last month I ran into an old friend, her hair looked outstanding. When asked where she went, she raved about Jonathan. Try 135- I brought in older pictures and magazines (long brown hair with golden highlights) and the results matched the photos. The people are warm, talkative, and attentive. Anyone who can make bright orange hair perfectly highlighted brown/blonde on a Friday while being nice is a miracle worker!
Pros: great color!, smart stylists, great customer servic
Cons: parking

After living in the Triangle area for almost two years, I think I finally found my stylist. Ashlyn was both sympathetic to me for the AWFUL haircut I got days before at another salon (which is heavily advertised on citysearch) and she managed to make me feel beautiful when I left. I have been to several hairdressers over the last two years and was relieved to meet a stylist who was intuitive to what I asked for (and not the '80s look I got instead two days earlier) and took the time to actually style my hair. As for the rating from 2002 about the annoying girl, unless she morphed into the sweetie of a guy working behind the desk now, it's safe to say she's gone and you'd find this place both charming and up-to-speed with the latest looks!
Pros: Friendly staff, Great location, Great haircuts
Cons: Parking can be tough

I like the location of Salon 135 because it is so close to the UNC Chapel Hill campus. This is the reason I repeatedly went to get my hair highlighted and cut there. I finally had to leave because the cuts and highlights were not getting any better. I have heard the men stylists are better than the women stylists there.
Pros: location
Cons: poor stylists, slow

Salon 135 offers a city atmosphere in the heart of Franklin Street. You pay for what you get. If you want a cheap hair cut go to great clips but you won't be satisfied. The staff is solid with ideas about what works best for each person. Go ask Bulah at Great Clips to just do what she thinks best with your hair and you'll be terrified of the results. Ask someone at 135 to do so and you'll walk out thinking you're a rock star. Two thumbs up!

I tried this salon when I first moved here, on the advice of a friend. The girl making appointments was very rude and snobby. Even when she was speaking to other customers on the phone, she was rude, and it seemed like they were bothering her. My stylist was nice, but my cut was nothing new. I went back a few times for lack of wanting to look around, but eventually I left. I could not deal with the counter girl any more. It's all about the hype, and I never left a cut that I was crazy about.
Pros: chatty stylist
Cons: rude staff, too trendy, no parking

New to town, I was looking for someone to cut and highlight my hair. I wanted someone who was up-to-date on styles and experienced with highlighting and was directed to Salon 135. I went a couple of times, and, each time, I was underwhemed. When I reluctantly HAD to have my hair highlighted (it had been quite a long time since my out-of-state move), I was horrified by my stylist's version of mixing color. He randomly added peroxide to an existing mix. No measuring. No color charting. The results were, let's say, less than desirable. The following day, I called another stylist to repair both cut and color. In summation: I go to a salon for interesting and enhancing cuts and color, not atmosphere. In this case, I found the funk not so fab.
Pros: atmosphere, location
Cons: color guesswork, mediocre cut
