User Reviews for Piedmont

2 Star Rating: Below Average

I spent 8 dollars on a salad that had lettuce, parsley, olive oil and pepper. Thats it. I spent 18 dollars on the ravioli that was meatless AND I had to add salt (twice!). Lastly, the chocolate mousse was super sweet and not rich. I would describe it has whipped chocolate frosting. The service was very good and the atmosphere was really nice (although loud). Overall, I would say it is below average FOR the price and all the hype.

Pros: Service, atmosphere

Cons: Price, Flavor, Value

Arrived at 7:30. Lots of empty tables, but the hostess had to "confer " with waiter that he wanted to take me as I was a party of one. Was informed that they were out of one entree and one appetizer even though they had only been open for dinner for two hours. When I was brought my $18 dollar ricotta ravioli (meatless - I mean $18? - come on!) I was told flippantly that they were out of one of the interesting ingredients, pink turnips. No apology, no informing me before-hand just a bitchy "here-you-go". Tres gauche, non-remarkable food, non-remarkable staff. Too bad because the location is great.

Pros: Location.

Cons: Owner's attitude, staff lack of courtesy to customers, food prices.

This place has a somewhat sparse decor with high ceilings and a finished concrete floor. Generally appealing, but maybe a tad stark. The service and food are excellent. I've had brunch and dinner here and both were excellent. The shrimp and grits was fantastic. The shrimp were extra flavorful and well seasoned. The portion was a bit large but not overpriced.

We came here for an event with a prix fixe menu. I wisely selected the pate as an appetizer- you have to try it! Also, their chocolate cake dessert was absolutely amazing. The service was incredible considering we were a group of 35 or so.

Pros: Appetizers and desserts

Cons: Parking may be difficult

Piedmont is located in the heart of lovely? Durham downtown. Food tried: Homemade pastrami, osso bucco, pomme frites. Pastrami is great - even when compared to the Jewish delis in Squirrel Hill, PA. (Pittsburgh). Osso bucco was done properly, and rissoto milanese was good too. The fries - these might be my favorite fries in NC. I've had better in Montreal and in Paris, but these are really really good. Alcohol (beer, wines) is priced a bit higher - most people order a drink, and they do target that. There Bloody Mary with pickled okra is good... Service is not attentive, but given that it is crowded most of the time, it's obvious why...

Pros: Great fries. Good food in general.

Cons: Pricey alcohol and parking

We went to the Piedmont after hearing great remarks from friends. What awaited us, made us want to keep coming back: fantastic preparation and service, great food, and a range of new flavors that you won't find anywhere else. We sat at the bar on Friday night because we had arrived after seven pm without any reservation. We discovered this was the best seat in the house. The bar staff told us that the chefs own the restaurant and make their own bitters for their unique cocktails. It is with the same attention to detail that the chefs create their food. From meat or vegetarian dishes to desserts and cheeses, everything is selected for flavors that complement each other. On the Saturday lunchtime we discovered the place is very child friendly. My recommendation is that you go there as often as you can because not only is it wonderful food, it is affordable too.

Pros: Great Service, Great Flavor, Great Owner Independently Operated Business

Cons: This doesn't exist at the Piedmont

I went with several friends for the first time recently and we were all very happy with our meals. As a group we eat out often and at restaurants ranging from the moderately priced to quite expensive... this meal ranked in the top tier. My seafood stew was really great, especially when compared to a similar dish that I had just a few days before at a much more expensive restaurant in Raleigh. My friends duck was excellent too. The meal was very affordable (entree's priced in the low/mid teens) and a great value considering the quality. The only shortcoming were a slightly indifferent server and an underwhelming cheese sampler appetizer - both easily overlooked.

Pros: delicious, good prices, neat atmosphere

Cons: none

We have been to Piedmont a couple of times for dinner and I have also been their for lunch. The dishes have always been tasty and carefully prepared. I have enjoyed the wines I have selected, which were on the low side price-wise. It has been pretty busy on weekend nights, so reservations are recommended. Lunch also fills up by about 12:15.
