A friend recently recommended Syd's Hairshop to me. After seeing her super cute cut, i was inspired to make a change. I have tried several salons in the triangle area with mediocre results. Syd's is relaxed and fun. Friendly staff, especially the receptionist. My stylist Jenny, gave me exactly what I wanted. Now I am inspired to try color! I will definitely be going back to Syd's from now on. I've found my salon in Chapel Hill!!
Pros: Amazing price, parking lot!! friendly staff
Cons: none

I've had haircuts by a few different stylists at Syd's, and they were all very good, but I've had such great cuts with Jenean that I'm going to be requesting her from now on. She gave me great, long layers a few months ago when my hair was half way down my back, and then when I came in last weekend half wanting a bob, half scared to cut it all, she wisely suggested an in-between "transition" cut, and then gave me the best hair cut I've ever had. The $110 cuts I used to get in New York don't even come close to this $40 cut. My mom and my sister both made appointments with her after they saw my hair, and I've received a ton of compliments. I'm super happy with my new cut, and I'll definitely be returning for maintenance trims, rather than waiting 6 months between visits like I usually do.
Pros: Casual, fun atmosphere, cool friendly staff, great value

I just wanted to take the time to say that Amy Testerman is the best hairstylist I have ever had in my 30 years. She is friendly and always wants to know exactly what I want from the experience, and then does her best to make my hair look just right. I have come in with no idea what I wanted and just let her go at it, and she comes up with the cutest cuts. I trust her so much that Amy will be doing my hair for my wedding this May. I have recommended her to several friends, all of whom are now regular clients. Amy is an asset to Syds.
Pros: Amy works there
Cons: Some people just can't handle this level of skill.

REVIEW 1: I had heard lots of good things about Syd's, so after moving back to Chapel Hill from New York (and getting great haircuts there!--and I am totally haircut-phobic. I cut my hair by myself for 7 years until moving to NYC), I decided to give it a try. I told Amy that I just wanted a trim and a little bit of shape to it, as I am growing my hair out. Amy made me thankful that I used to cut my own hair, because when I got home I had to fix it myself, cutting off a good two-three inches (now to my shoulders). The problem wasn't that I didn't like the style, it's that it was simply a bad haircut and that Amy used bad judgment. I do not have thick hair by any measure, but Amy thought that it would be a good idea to use thinning shears. Halfway through the haircut I got the feeling that it was more that she was having fun using those special little scissors than that she was using them to give me a good cut. Then, she cut such short layers throughout that I ended up looking like Carol Brady, the mullet years (you know, the cut that made you say, "my god, she should really just cut off that extra hangy part of her hair so that she could have a really, really cute pixie cut!!!"). Oh thank you, Amy, for making my hair so thin that it looks like I plastered it to my head! Thank you, thank you, dear Amy, for I will never have to wear a bike helmet again, as my hair looks so much like one already that any cop would mistake me for someone playing it safe! Thank you, thank you, thank you! REVIEW 2: Oh, Gwen! You gave me the most rockin' hair color ever: super blonde that would be too sweet, except for the incredible, badass pink streaks you put in it! Gwen did exactly what I asked for, and she spent a lot of time analyzing my hair to make sure it would come out just right. Awesome!!
Pros: Cheap cut/color. Good parking. Cute salon. GWEN.
Cons: Uhh, the staff? No, the skill level. No no, the end result. Oh no, maybe the thinning shears? Oh, uh, all of that. Plus having to walk out looking like a mullet head.

I have lived in London, New York and San Francisco. I call the Triangle home now. I have been going to Syd's for severl years and am always welcomed and gvien the hair cut that I want. Sometimes I get color (yes I'm a guy) and I'm always pleased with the results. The atmosphere is fun and easy-going and the music is fun. The location is just-off Franklin street and there's always parking in their lot. The staff is friendly and offer me a latte or soda when I wait.
Pros: location, price, service
Cons: often busy

Syd's isn't your typical salon -- casual atmosphere and great music! Everyone who works there has tattoos and there is a gas pump in front of the building with flames painted on it. My haircut is great and she showed me how to style it. I'll be back.

I got the worst haircut and highlights---EVER...at Syd's. While the atmosphere was cool and relaxed, I left with hair that stunk (and the smell lasted for DAYS---even through like 25 washings) and I looked like I cut my hair myself. It was such a disappointment, especially after having friends who went there and had great results and paying over $200 for stinky hair. I hope I just caught things on an off day, but I am not willing to risk going back. For great hair in Chapel Hill, try Mina's....they fixed my Syd's disaster and I have been thrilled everytime I have had my hair done there. We refer to Syd's as "Syd's Mullet Shop" after my experience!!! I think guys have better luck with the hair, but the atmosphere is really chill.
Pros: cool atmosphere

Syd's recently upped the price of a women's cut to $30, but this is still well-below what you would expect to pay in a cosmopolitan area for something of the same quality. If you have a blunt cut or a bob, and if you want to continue sporting the same do for the next decade or so, then you should not try Syd's. However, if you are slightly more adventurous, then by all means give it a try. I see Marit now, and I have since my first appointment a year ago. She listens to what I want, but I am not afraid to trust her judgement, either. She is able to inject creativity into the cuts I have asked for, and I have seen her do this with other clients as well. I do wish they offered more services at Syd's, like maybe some waxing, but I am very happy with the cool cuts and the edgy coloring already available.
Pros: Cool and hip but without the cool and hip price
Cons: Not enough services offered

It is the worst place I have ever been. Don't go there. Bad service, irresponsible . Waste of money!

and Syds always fits me in. I can show up early and use the wifi which I love... then I have fun with Amy. I can't stand the typical $10 super cuts deal for men... , Amy always gives me something slightly funky but tame that I enjoy and it looks good for 5-6 weeks until I think about going back. I'm not sure what happened with reviewer 'cheetah' above but that doesn't reflect my experiences there. Great place, great people, convenient and I'm lookin' good for weeks.
Cons: Some people are used to $10 for a haircut, when you're ready to spend a little more and look a LOT better you'll get over the $25-30.
