Editorial Review for Fins Restaurant – by Trevor Holland

In Short
This contemporary, high-end restaurant sets an elegant scene with fine linens, silverware and candlelight. A wall of frosted glass and an aquarium help separate the dining area from the granite-topped bar. Fins offers innovative Cal-Asian seafood creations with French touches. Favored entrees includ the crispy Thai snapper from Fiji, glazed with an Indonesian-style sauce of roasted cashew and palm sugar. Desserts are first class, just be ready to spend three figures when dining for two.

Fins, when located in North Raleigh, had been my favorite restaurant. My wife and I had frequently celebrated anniversaries and birthdays at Fins during the past five years. We had looked forward to trying the new location in downtown Raleigh. We went for lunch several weeks ago, and I was very disappointed in the food and the service. We entered the restaurant at about 11:30 AM. The owner/manager was standing nearby, but she failed to greet us or to acknowledge our presence. While waiting for the hostess, I noticed the sanitation rating was 93%; I prefer a rating of 95% or higher. After several minutes, the hostess showed up and took us to a table located in what appeared to be a main server walkway. Since there was only one other couple in the room, I asked for a table away from server traffic. (As it turned out, there was not much server traffic.) After consulting with the owner/manager, the hostess gave us a very small table in a drafty corner. My wife ordered a salmon salad, and I ordered a Vietnamese pork sandwich. Although there was only one other couple in the restaurant at the time, the server brought my wife the wrong order. We waited several minutes for the correction. I rated my sandwich as poor; the pork did not taste or smell very fresh. I struggled to eat half of it. After tasting my wife’s dish, I agreed with her that the salmon salad was mediocre at best. The spacious dinning room was sparsely filled with not more than 16 people at any time. We did not see the server again until we had stopped eating, and she came to ask about dissert. Our water glasses had not been refilled. We did not order dissert; I just wanted to leave. We left about 12:45 PM. Our experiences in the previous North Raleigh location had always been exceptionally good. After this bad experience, I will not be going back to Fins in downtown Raleigh for lunch or dinner.

Arrived on a Fri nite around 6. Chose the bar as many times this is quicker for us. The bartender was fantastic. Knew the menu inside out. Made recommendations. The cuttlefish and hotpot were fantastic. It was not busy when we arrived but getting busy by the time we left. Will definitely return. The entrees were pricey, we did not order any on this trip.

Pros: Great bartender and beers on draft

Cons: na
