Editorial Review for North Carolina Museum of History – by Elisabeth Bergman
In Short
Built in 1994, the museum highlights the lives of North Carolinians from the state's early days to the present. You won't find yourself trapped by an aging docent who relishes dusty Civil War artifacts (OK, there are some dusty Civil War artifacts), but you may meet a costumed actor playing a Confederate soldier or the pirate Blackbeard. You'll also find interactive displays on how North Carolinians practiced medicine in the early 19th century and how they fared during the Civil War. There's even an exhibit on moonshine.

Insider Tips
Know Before You GODiscovery rooms, music programs and storytelling bring North Carolina history to life even for the youngest Carolinians.
The ExtrasThe museum is spacious and you'll want to save time for the gift shop, but you can usually go through it in an afternoon and not even be museum-weary.

Do you know anything about NC history? You are not likely to learn it on a visit here. The facility is beautiful; unfortunately the exhibits are so random and without focus that one wonders why they bothered building it. Good luck finding any coherent view of the development of North Carolina - you'll have to settle for walking through the NC Sports Hall of Fame instead. There also is a ton of wasted space that could be used - walk through the Museum of Natural History - which grabs your attention immediately - and you will see what I mean. The only plus is that some of the children's programs are good, with excellent staff. However, your kids are not going to want to stick around after the program.
Pros: the building is nice
Cons: no focus, minimal and boring exhibits

I was very impressed with all the exhibits that this museum offered. It offered everything from sports to the civil war, including facts on the history of medicine. I enjoyed my experience and think it would be an excellent learning opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about the history of North Carolina.
Pros: Free, Kid-friendly, Informative
