Editorial Review for Hell – by Lynn Bryan

In Short
Crimson walls, red pool tables and gory furniture accented with rubber rats and skeletons set the scene. Tetris, Time Pilot and air hockey are the stalagmites in this hole. The bar boasts a damned-fun drink list, including sips called Crime & Punishment and The Devil's Elbow. Unlike the real deal, Chapel Hill's Hell is tough to get into--you don't have to be a murderer--but you must become a member.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Don't head to Hell for good conversation. With the jukebox blasting the likes of Morrissey and the Beach Boys, you have to bend your ear or read lips.

Hell is the greatest hole in the wall basement bar. It is a members only club where non members must be on the guest list (still not sure how we managed to make the list). The drinks are very reasonably priced and service is great. If you have to use the restroom, I would suggest you go upstairs to another establishment. Coming from a near 40 year old Hoosier, this place is fantastic and I will go back every visit to Chapel Hill.

Pros: Air Hockey, Pool Tables, Atmosphere

Cons: Bathroom is BAD

This bar was my local before I transplanted myself in NYC. Simply put, this is a unpretentious no-nonsense kind of bar where people go to drink with their friends (and not necessarily make new ones, which can a plus). The jukebox, pool tables (do not put drinks on the tables. period.) and old school video games (for a quarter!) are sideshows to the main attraction: socializing with your friends at the bar. Try the Esme; it's a drink named for the owner's daughter.

Pros: Value, Video games, Service

Cons: Dark, Can be smokey
