Editorial Review for Piedmont – by Laura Rudolph

In Short
Italy's Piedmont meets North Carolina's Piedmont with the best of both showcased in locally sourced ingredients and Italian country dishes. Exposed ductwork, leather banquettes, saring arched ceilings and canvassed chandeliers easily pass the requisite warehouse-chic test. The large curved bar offers a window into the kitchen, where you can watch the chefs prepare signature dishes like braised pork belly with sweet potato puree and duck confit over rapini. And don't forget to try The Durhamite: a high octane version of sweet tea.

Insider Tips

Save Money

There's nothing pretentious about the prices---expect to find main courses for well under $15.

When to Go

Stop by on Saturdays for homemade brioche and jam and rub elbows with the suppliers of the nearby Durham Farmer's Market.

The Extras

Get some culture. Piedmont shares its former warehouse space with two Indy art galleries.

2 Star Rating: Below Average

I spent 8 dollars on a salad that had lettuce, parsley, olive oil and pepper. Thats it. I spent 18 dollars on the ravioli that was meatless AND I had to add salt (twice!). Lastly, the chocolate mousse was super sweet and not rich. I would describe it has whipped chocolate frosting. The service was very good and the atmosphere was really nice (although loud). Overall, I would say it is below average FOR the price and all the hype.

Pros: Service, atmosphere

Cons: Price, Flavor, Value

Arrived at 7:30. Lots of empty tables, but the hostess had to "confer " with waiter that he wanted to take me as I was a party of one. Was informed that they were out of one entree and one appetizer even though they had only been open for dinner for two hours. When I was brought my $18 dollar ricotta ravioli (meatless - I mean $18? - come on!) I was told flippantly that they were out of one of the interesting ingredients, pink turnips. No apology, no informing me before-hand just a bitchy "here-you-go". Tres gauche, non-remarkable food, non-remarkable staff. Too bad because the location is great.

Pros: Location.

Cons: Owner's attitude, staff lack of courtesy to customers, food prices.
