Editorial Review for Mt Fuji – by Alex Leviton

The Scene
Expansive red walls and sleek wood furnishings complement the exposed ducts and brickwork of Durham's happening downtown ex-tobacco warehouse, Brightleaf Square. Outdoor dining is three seasons, or take off your shoes and sit on floor cushions in the low-light tatami mat room for Japanese minimalist ambience.

The Food
Check out the noodle dishes such as the pad see ew, Thailand's version of comfort food, with crunchy broccoli and bok choy in a sweet dark soy sauce. Many of the sushi offerings are Americanized with mayonnaise, so stick with nigiri for authentic tastes. Tempura--shrimp or vegetable--is excellently breaded and tender. For a texture sensation, try the chicken lettuce wrap appetizer. A good bet for those who like milder heat is the green curry, with sliced tender chicken smothered in yin-like coconut milk with yang-like red pepper.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Ask at lunchtime to be seated in the semi-private tatami mat room, but best to reserve ahead for dinner.

What to Drink

Mt Fuji serves a whole host of fancy cocktail drinks, almost a dozen different sakes available and six beers on tap until 2am on weekends.

Where to Sit

Sports buffs will appreciate the wide-screen plasma TV at the sushi bar during sporting events, but others might choose to sit on the patio those nights.

Depending on the night (I recommend Tuesdays and would stay away on Mondays) this is actually pretty good sushi.

Pros: fish can be very fresh, presentation always good

Cons: bad service

The food on our table was not cooked proper at all. My dish smelled like raw egg :( Not able to eat any of the dishes at our table.

Cons: Thumbs down

Another Triangle Pan-Asian restaurant, but this time it's elegantly situated in historic high-ceilinged Brightleaf Square.  See the full editorial review.
