Editorial Review for Nana's Chophouse – by Kristine Forrest
In Short
Nana's dining room manages to be lovely with little effort--exposed brick walls, soft beige paper-shade lights and cushy leather booths provide a chic space for lingering over dinner. The bar area is large and upscale, but it's the floor-to-ceiling wine room that truly deserves your attention. The roasted Portabella mushroom carpaccio with artichokes makes a fine starter--each bite promises a burst of lightly salted, tangy flavor.

Insider Tips
Where To SitIf you're up for a cocktail and people-watching, ask for a seat near the bar area's front window. Otherwise, a spacious booth in the middle of the dining room is prime real estate here.
The ExtrasThere's a large private room near the back of the restaurant if you're planning a get-together; the space is cordoned off with frosted glass doors.
ParkingIt's tough to find a space downtown, so take advantage of the restaurant's free valet parking.

Nana's Chophouse closed last month... maybe not a surprise to some? There's a terrific new place there now, called The Pit (thepit-raleigh. com). It's a sort of mix between fine atmosphere and REAL NC BBQ.

My boyfriend and I chose Nana's on a Friday night in early October. We walked right in and got a table, which was a surprise for Friday night at 7:30pm. We ordered the antipasti, which left little to be said. It was served with the worst, slimiest, foulest bresaola and soppa, and 3 cheeses on a bed of stale almonds and canned vegetables. My boyfriend ordered a promising dish of lamb loin chops - however, when we were served, them lamb loin chop was an indistinguishable rectangular cut of BEEF, not lamb. For my dish, I chose the scallops - but paired it with the mushroom polenta cake and fava beans. The scallops were great - fava beans were cooked wonderfully, but the polenta cake was undercooked, cold, and was actually grits. The only saving grace to this meal was that the wine list was adequate to "heal our pain." This was the worst restaurant we have tried in Raleigh, and really, on the east coast. we will never go back!
Pros: Good wine list, prompt service
Cons: Everything else
