Other than "chain" donut shops, it's hard to find a good donut in NC! We found this quaint little bakery tucked off Harrison Avenue in Cary to be just what we were looking for. It's in the "Northside Station", which also contains the "Upper Deck Sports Pub." They have a wonderful array of donuts, danish, and pastries --- not to mention their breads and rolls. You can get a donut & coffee for $1.29 or a donut & bagel for $1.49 ... or order your wedding cake! There are 3 display cases ... one for donuts, one for specialty cakes and desserts, one for danish and other wonderful treats. The breads are stacked on shelves behind the display cases. You can bring home a few treats for your family or purchase treats for a dinner party! There is plenty to choose from. There is also a refrigerator with cold beverages to purchase and a "do it yourself" coffee counter. Hours are a bit restrictive, so be sure to check it out ahead of time. As of March 2007, Mon thru Thur, 6:30 to 4, Fri 6:30-5, Sat 7-2 and CLOSED SUNDAY.

Pros: Great quality, taste and variety.

Cons: Location - Northside Station on Harrison, clerk not very friendly.

Sweet Traditions has perhaps the best eclair I've had in the Triangle. What most bakeries call eclairs I would call "cream sticks". Sweet Traditions has those too, but they also have wonderful eclairs made with light pastry and filled with boston cream. I also recommend their 99 cent loaves of Italian bread. The Challah bread is also awesome and particularly good for french toast. I've never been disappointed with anything from Sweet Traditions.

Pros: Parking, location, open early

Cons: Not everything is available first-thing in the morning.
