Editorial Review for Capital City Chop House – by Rebecca Gunn
In Short
The Chop House sits against a vast backdrop of grassy knolls. Seconds from RDU International, it's the closest thing to a real restaurant near the terminals. Dimly lit with dark wood, lots of booths and a large bar, Capital City is just like the chop house in every other good-sized American city. You'll see friends enjoying a quick beer, parents entertaining children with Shirley Temples, and couples indulging in Philly cheese steaks.

Excellent venue for a quiet, succulent dinner. Service is excellent. Steaks were excellent. The Oyster salad is in and of itself worth the visit. High dollar, but if the prices do not bother you too badly, this is a definite place to go in Raleigh. It's exactly what we would expect a chop house to be.
Pros: Steak, oyster salad, service, ambience
Cons: Very expensive.

I won't give it one star, since the food at the Chop House is AMAZING. My husband and I have dined here four times in the last year, and each time the meal was well worth the $80 tab. However, the service was absolutely appalling... at each meal. The waitstaff couldn't care less about you, and are often rude. They must pay their waitstaff well, because they're obviously not into earning good tips. One waiter argued with me when I observed that something was amiss with one of our orders. The last time we went was the worst and is the reason we will never return. We had an older gentleman for a waiter who came over to ask us if we'd like cocktails to start our meal. My husband and I don't drink much, so we declined. He looked at us like we'd insulted his mother, and walked off before we could ask for two glasses of water. We sat for almost ten minutes before he reappeared to take our drink order, and my husband had to literally grab his sleeve to get his attention after he walked past us several times with empty glasses and no bread. He wouldn't look at you when you were speaking to him, and often interrupted us when we were trying to place our order. He made us feel guilty for asking him for something. Getting refills was a chore. When we declined dessert, he snapped: "Well I guess you'll be wanting your check then." Naturally, we were very angry and as such left a tip commisurate with the level of service we'd received. The waiter hovered over me as I was signing the bill and had the nerve to ask me if I was sure this was correct. I told him that given the evening's experience, he was lucky he got that much. My husband's family owns a restaurant, so I feel that we have a very realistic expectation of what's acceptable and what's not. I understand that people sometimes have bad days, and that's okay...but this was unreal. And it happened more than once. Yeesh.
