Editorial Review for Sullivan's Steakhouse – by Dana Bowen

In Short
The sprawling, elegant dining room, lined with high-walled booths and packed with white-clothed tables--looks and sounds like a Chicago-style steakhouse from the '40s. Large groups enjoy raucous meals, sending the serious, if frazzled servers into a tizzy. The traditional menu adds welcome intrigue with updated retro dishes. Tender filet mignon and well-marbled Kansas Strip are expertly grilled, as is a gigantic smoked pork chop that falls short on flavor.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

There are few bargains to be found on the selective wine list: one is a jammy pinot noir from Rodney Strong ($35).

When to Go

There's always live music during dinner: Weekends bring a live, five-piece jazz band; during the week, a piano player or solo musician entertains.

Where to Sit

Step into the art-deco library and polished wood bar where gussied up wait-listers sip whiskies, smoke cigars and sway to jazzy piano tunes--you'll swear you've landed in a bygone era, when dining out meant more than a meal.

I've been a fan of Sullivan's for years, and I hoped to walk away a fan as well after the Mother's Day brunch they offered...ehhhh, not so much. Luckily mama was happy, but I (footing the $texas bill) was not . I ordered the waffles and was told they were out. Then our server came back and said they did have waffles. Great! But what I got definitely didn't look like the delicious, fluffy, big triangles with deep pockets that this kid seemed to be enjoying when I first walked in. What did I get? Eggos...$14 for 4 eggos with fruit topping. I'll never be attending their Mother's Day brunch again..and probably not for dinner anymore either. This place has certainly gone down the crapper over the years...

For the price, go to Fin's downtown and enjoy a much better dinner. It's Prime Only has steak prepared just as nice.

Pros: Food

Cons: morally corrupt management
