Editorial Review for Kim Son – by Taylor Davenport

In Short
Tables and booths. The red and black schematics of Oriental decor. You'll see everyone from truckers to Durham professionals to youthful hipsters. Possibly the best Vietnamese fare in the area. From pho--Vietnamese rice noodle soup with chicken--to steamed dumplings to lemongrass chicken, you can't go wrong with the dishes here.

Delightfully sketchy atmosphere. Fun traditional drinks. Best spring rolls in town - try the "make your own" option. I think the pho is excellent, and I'm shocked by the suggestion for Lime and Basil, instead. The cut of meats is better at Lime, but the spice and flavour is severely lacking compared to Kim Son.

I must say this place was pretty awful. They don't serve many of the traditional meats with the pho (tripes, tendon, fat brisket) which means the broth isn't made properly either. The fish sauce was sour, and overly sweet... the bowl is miniscule and the price is high. I'm used to pho places that offer pungent, savory broth in a huge bowl for about $6. This place definitely doesn't deliver. Perhaps this place is acceptable if you have not been exposed to real vietnamese food, prepared for the vietnamese palate without cutting corners, but a pho place without so many of the traditional ingredients would be the laughing stock of any vietnamese community. Though the area seems to lack any superior vietnamese, other establishments still manage to do better than this one.

Cons: bland, expensive, inauthentic

A kitschy mom and pop that offers cheap, healthy bowls of pho and steamed egg rolls.  See the full editorial review.
