Editorial Review for Carolina Theatre – by Zach Hanner
In Short
Built in 1926, the Carolina Theatre is the last remaining original theaters in the Durham area. Since its restoration, the space has been used for showing films, mostly. You can catch lesser-known indie films here, and occasionally a Hollywood product lumbers in. The gorgeous Fletcher Hall has become a prime spot for touring music acts that are too big for clubs but who want an intimate space.

Insider Tips
Where to SitGrab a seat in the balcony, one of the best spots in the house--you're away from the crowd and still close enough to the stage for an intimate viewing.
What to DrinkTreat yourself to an inexpensive glass of wine or beer or a snack from the concession stand. Take in the interior of the ornate, sophisticated hall.

The Carolina is the only place in durham to catch anything outside the top blockbusters. The film prints are always well cared for, the theatres are clean and comfortable, and as an added bonus buy a beer or a glass of wine. If only the cinema had more screens! They don't get enough of the art house, documentaries, or indy films in that a true film lover craves.
Pros: only place to go!

As a theater, Carolina Theater fails miserably. The whole point of a theater is to view entertainment. If you can't see the entertainment, the whole experience is ruined. The entire time I was there, I could not see between 1/4 and 1/3 of the screen due to the person in front of me blocking my view. My friend could not see between 40-50% of the screen due to the person in front of him blocking his view. The seats were extremely uncomfortable. However, the sound was great, and the theater staff were very friendly. The problem rests solely on the seating and, due to that, I will never go to another event at this theater again. It was very disappointing.
Pros: Nice staff, good sound
Cons: Seating, Seating, Seating
